11:25 pm - Avatar: Book of Fire
I finished that sketch I did a couple of days ago.

The piece itself, the colours are inspired by a Rival Schools poster. The work itself is inspired by Lauren Montgomery's cover of the new Avatar magazine issue.

Okay, not exactly step by step of how I colour, but more like the progression of my colours.

The work is also available as a 1280X960 Wallpaper.

The cincher is, those strong lighting from the lightning is the easiest thing in the piece... it's the only thing I didn't have to do adjustments for...

Thanks ^^ Actually, when I do fanart, I try to change my style a bit to fit the series' own established style (except for American comic characters... there's so much artists that goes through them throughout the years that I have the freedom to use whatever style I want)

(from avatar_fans) This is a seriously awesome picture, but Aang's left foot's big toe is looking like an opposable thumb. So you might want to fix that. ^^;;

That was done on purpose actually, it's an exaggeration... like someone mention on avatar_fans, he has monkey toes, to give it the extra push...

Ooo...so...pretty. It took me a minute to recognize Zuko, though--his scar is in shadow. But I like the shaggy grunge look for him.

Unfortunately, I think Nick really dropped the ball, waiting so long on this one. My kid (the low end of the target demographic) barely registered the return of Avatar. I think I was more excited by it. Now I'm more petrified than excited. I have this big fear that it's going to go the way of other serial series and jump the shark. Or in spite of the "ten new eps" guarantee, it will be three new eps and a series of mistaken broadcasts of old repeats and peter off right before any sort of resolution. Sort of like Firefly.

Still, I hold out hope.

Me too... I can only hope for the best...

I did the sketch for this one before I saw episode 1 of season 3, so I was excited when I sketched it, but episode 1 was kinda disappointing for me in that a lot of the exposition was only shown in the Avatar magazine, forcing us to buy that to really get the "why, how and what" of episode 1, making episode 1 kinda weak as a "returning episode"... I mean, yeah, they can do the tie-ins thing but at the same time, they really have to find a way to make it so that people who never (or cannot) read the tie-ins can understand why things are happening like what they have alluvasudden like... but, I'm still excited for season 3, which hopefully, will resolve a lot of things and not be as weak as epsidoe 1...

Fo' shore, a returning episode should so be stronger...

I think the piece of exposition that bothered me the most was Mei and Zuko's relationship having been developed entirely off camera. The thing with the Earth King and his bear doesn't really affect anything, because it's played as a joke anyways, but the Mei/Zuko thing is hugely signifigant, as well as being the an important part of his "B-Story", which mirrors Aang's... plus it was a HUGE cocktease after hinting at it in the second season, only to totally NOT follow up on it? Really? That's how you want to play this out? I found it really jarring and unconvincing... like... it just HAPPENS, and we're supposed to accept it. If I hadn't read the magazine, I'd be totally pissed.

It'd be different if the magazine exclusively comics, then I'd be buying it, but it's mostly full of other bullshit material I don't care about... if it had model sheets or other art or something maybe... but I digress... I was disappointed after pysching myself up for it, and it just felt like a lot of stuff being explained to me, rather than a big, exciting, premiere. The rest of the season looks like it'll be tits though. ^_^

I have this crazy theory about everything coming back to Azula, but I'll post it on my LJ where people can ignore it, later. :B

Ah hah, I'd love to hear about your Azula theory dude, so post it quick.

But yeah, that's the thing that got me disappointed the most, it's the first episode of the latest season of the most anticipated cartoon series of the current times and all they can come up with is that. I mean, they really could've (and they can too, I know they can) done a more epic return of avatar episode.

Wow, that is beautiful. I LOVE the colors. I really, really do. And the poses are so dynamic, and so solid. Just... gah. *stares*

What did you use to color it? It looks like opencanvas.

You need to win something for this.

Well, you've unseated "Sexy Witchblade Anime" desktop as my wallpaper of choice guy. Congratuations! This is really nice guy. I like the monochromatic color scheme in the background... it looks ominous.

Thank Capcom for that. I've always wanted to do the slow phase into the monochromatic like Capcom does and never really succeeded... I think I have a slight success in this one... slight...
